Set in a stunning landscape at the foot of Mount Hakone on the banks of Lake Ashi, the Hakone Shrine is a Shinto Shrine that traces its origins to the 8thcentury when it was established on Mount Komagatake (Motomiya Shrine). There is a vermilion tori or gate on the lake front, with a stepped path through the cedar forest leading up to the shrine. It is believed that the Priest Mangan, who founded the shrine, pacified the nine-headed dragon that lived in the bottom of Lake Ashi. The choyuza (basin) has a faucet with water springing from the mouths of this dragon, and the Kuzuryu Shrine here is dedicated to it. The main spirits worshipped here, known as the Hakone Okami, are Ninigi-no-Mikoto, Konohanasakuya-hime, and Hoori-no-Mikoto.
