The Hakone Sekisho or Checkpoint on the banks of Lake Ashi dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868), when Hakone was a major hub on the Tokaido Road, a trade route linking Tokyo and Kyoto. The Sekisho was built in 1619 to control and monitor traffic on the road, but fell into neglect from 1868 onwards when it stopped being used. It was restored to its original look in 2007, with a watch tower, housing and prison. Nearby is the Sekisho Museum dedicated to the history of the checkpoint.
