Originally built in the 14th century after the arrival of the Minori Friars in Alghero, the Chiesa di San Francesco was renovated in Catalan-Gothic style in the 15thcentury, with Renaissance additions in the 16thcentury. One of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the city, the plain sandstone façade belies its Baroque interiors, which have an 18th century polychrome marble altar of Madonna with the Saints Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua. The cloister with 22 columns and octagonal pillars leads to the chapel at the base of the bell tower.
