Shikemichi is a historic area that dates back to the 17thcentury. In 1610, when the Owari clan of the Tokugawa shogunate moved the capital from Kiyosu to Nagoya, people settled in designated areas as per social class. Merchants settled in the Shikemichi area on the banks of the Hori River, along which they used to ship their merchandise such as rice, miso, sake and salt. Though most of the original structures were destroyed in the fire of 1700, the area retains buildings that were built thereafter till 1740, which stand preserved in good condition. Explore the area to see the Gogo Bridge, Shinto Fuji Sengen Shrine, Komori Jizo, and the mini rooftop shrine Yanegami honoring Tsushima, Akiba and Atsuta Shrines.
