The Bayeux Cathedral is a historical Norman-Romanesque cathedral that traces its origins to the 7thcentury.
The Bayeux Cathedral is a historical Norman-Romanesque cathedral that traces its origins to the 7thcentury. Consecrated in 1077, it has been rebuilt and renovated several times over the years. It was the original home of the Bayeux Tapestry, which was kept here till the 18thcentury.
The edifice has a Romanesque core with a Gothic façade. The western façade has 5 portals, flanked by two 70 metre high towers. The south portal has scenes of the Last Judgment, while the north portal depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ. Inside, there are striking stained glass windows, including one that commemorates the Allied troops. The crypt has some fine murals from the 14thcentury. In summer, the church is beautifully lit at night to highlight the Gothic architectural features.
