Zagreb Cathedral, Zagreb

The Zagreb Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and St Stephen and St Ladislaus.

The Zagreb Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and St Stephen and St Ladislaus. The Gothic Revival edifice has two 108 metre high spires, making it the the tallest building in not just Croatia, but the entire region south-east of the Alps. Founded in 1093, the cathedral buildings on site have been destroyed by Mongols in 1242, fires in the 17th century and earthquake in 1880. It owes its current look to Herman Bolle's restoration in the early 20th century, though it still has frescoes in the sacristy dating from the 13th century, and medieval fortification walls. Highlights include the baroque marble altar with Madonna and Child, pulpit, Glagolithic inscription commemorating 1300 years of the baptism of Croats, the organ by Walcker of Ludwigsburg, and the tomb of Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac by Ivan Metrovi. The Nebojan Tower in front of the cathedral displays objects, documents and photographs dedicated to the Cardinal.
