The Calder Fountain on Custom House Square was built in 1859 to commemorate Royal Navy Commander Francis Anderson Calder, who was a founding member of the Belfast Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Georgian fountain is topped with a cast iron gas lamp and has inscriptions honoring Calder.
