Dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, the Chiesa di Santa Caterina was built in the 17th century on the ruins of the ancient Odeon, which was itself built on the ruins of a Hellenistic temple believed to have been dedicated to Aphrodite. At the centre of the Baroque façade is a marble statue of St Catherine from 1493, brought to Taormina by Capuchin Friars. The statue depicts St Catherine with an open book in one hand and a sword killing evil in the other. The interior has a single nave, and the crypt under the floor has the graves of well-known ancient locals.
