The Patarei Sea Fortress overlooking the Bay of Tallinn is not merely a defensive structure, but an integral part of the archeological heritage of Tallinn. Spread over 4 hectares, it comprises a curved sea-facing wing that is 247 metres long, and 3 radial wings, each 124 metres in length. Built in 1828-'40 by order of Tsar Nicholas I, the classical complex was initially used as an artillery battery and military barracks. From 1920 to 2005, it was used as the Central Prison till the new prison at Tartu was opened.
It was earlier open to visitors as a prison museum, but is now closed for reinforcements as the structure is endangered. You can however admire the mighty fortress from the Beeta promenade.
