Vaucluse House is one of the oldest extant colonial buildings in Sydney, and became the first house-museum of the city when it was opened to the public in 1915. The Gothic Revival style harbourside estate is set in the midst of 11 hectares of lush lawns with a farm, pleasure garden and Victorian kitchen garden. The original cottage and outbuildings built by Sir Henry Brown Hayes were further expanded by politician and entrepreneur William Charles Wentworth who enlarged the estate to encompass the surrounding 208 hectares. Colonial Architect George Cookney designed the stables, coach-house and other outbuildings in 1829. Explore the house to see the striking 19thcentury furniture and artworks which include reproductions of Old Master paintings.
