La Neustadt, Strasbourg

Neustadt, which literally translates to 'New City', is a district of Strasbourg that was created by the Germans during the Reichsland period as a new city center.

Neustadt, which literally translates to 'New City', is a district of Strasbourg that was created by the Germans during the Reichsland period as a new city center. It was planned meticulously with wide boulevards, perpendicular avenues, and monumental buildings to showcase the rise of German imperial power and its superior engineering and architecture. It has a mix of architectural styles such as Baroque Revival, Renaissance Revival, Gothic Revival, Art Nouveau, and Romanesque Revival.

At the heart of the Neustadt is the Place de la Republique, surrounded by the Palais du Rhin, National Library of Strasbourg, Musee Tomi Ungerer, National Theatre of Strasbourg, and 2 buildings of the Prefecture and General Treasury. The Avenue de la Liberté, which runs from the square to the Pont d'Auvergne, has the Hôtel des Douanes and Hôtel des Postes. Other highlights of Neustadt are the Palais de Justice on Place d'Islande, Palais des Fêtes on Avenue des Vosges, St Paul's Church, Gare de Strasbourg, Hôtel Brion, Villa Schutzenberger, Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune Catholic Church, and the Art Nouveau buildings at 22 Rue du Général de Castelnau and 56 Allée de la Robertsau. As you walk around the area, you will also come across several large red and yellow brick buildings, which were once used as barracks and now stand as representations of Prussian military architecture.
