Occupied since the 5th millennium BC, Akrotiri was a thriving Minoan Bronze Age settlement that flourished till 1627 BC when it was ravaged by a volcanic eruption and abandoned. Similar to Pompeii, the lava and volcanic ash wiped out the civilization but preserved the city, with several elements left intact. Excavations from the 19th century onwards point to a well developed society with paved streets, 3-storey buildings, and advanced drainage systems. Several frescoes have been discovered in the area, such as The Fisherman and the Lady from the House of Ladies, Spring in Room Delta II, and Flotilla in the West House.
