  Neighbourhoods and Streets

El Raval is a neighbourhood in the Ciutat Vella (Old City) of Barcelona known for its multi-ethnic character. The area around the port was earlier known as Barrio Chino, Barcelona's Chinatown. Once infamous for its nightlife scene of cabarets, crime and prostitution, it has evolved into an artsy and colorful district with few seedy corners. Explore the edgy neighborhood on a guided tour to see the bohemian side of the city. Beware of pickpockets in the area.

Historical attractions in the area include the Romanesque Monastery of Sant Pau del Camp from the 13th century, Neoclassical Church of San Agustín from the 18th century, Portal de Santa Madrona (Maritime Museum) which was part of the medieval city wall, the Fountain of Santa Eulalia (1673) on Plaza del Pedró, and Antoni Gaudí's Palau Güell, built for Eusebi Güell in 1886-'88. The World Trade Center Barcelona is situated right on the waterfront at the extreme end. El Gato de Raval, an enormous cat statue by Fernando Botero on the Rambla del Raval, is a popular landmark. The area is also home to the MACBA (Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona) and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, as well as smaller studios, art galleries and bookshops. Theatres include Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatre Poliorama, and BARTS.

Barcelona's most famous market, Mercado de San José or La Boquería, is also situated in El Raval.
