Trastevere, Rome

Trastevere is a charming neighborhood on the west bank of the Tiber that retains its medieval ambience.

Trastevere is a charming neighborhood on the west bank of the Tiber that retains its medieval ambience. The cobbled streets, locally called sampietrini, are narrow, winding and random, but losing your way will lead you to unexpected places you might not otherwise find.

The heart of the neighborhood is the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, dominated by the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, a 12th century church which contains important mosaics by Pietro Cavallini, as well as a relic of Saint Apollonia's head and a part of the Holy Sponge. The square in front of the church has an octagonal fountain by Donato Bramante, with later additions by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Carlo Fontana. The other Basilica in this area is the Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, built on the site of St Cecilia's house. It is noted for Stefano Maderno's Baroque marble sculpture 'Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia', which depicts the body of the saint exactly as it was discovered in the 16th century. The crypt has the relics of the saint and her husband Saint Valerian. Among the several other churches in the area such as the San Francesco a Ripa and Chiesa di San Benedetto in Piscinula, the Chiesa di San Pietro in Montorio stands out for Bramante's Tempietto tomb.

At the southern end of the Trastevere is the Porta Portese, a huge flea-market with thousands of stalls selling bric-a-brac, antiques, rare books, and vintage works.

While the atmosphere is breezy and laid-back during the day, Trastevere truly comes alive at night with its numerous bars, cafes and trattorias attracting crowds. Free flowing wine and al fresco dining lend a lively spirit, and transform the area into a sparkling neighborhood.
