Knights Quarter, Rhodes

The Knights’ Quarter was built by the Knights of St John in the 14th – 15th century as their headquarters and defensive fortification to protect themselves from invaders as well as local rebels. The Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its beautiful urban ensemble of Gothic buildings. Enter the walled area through Liberty Gate, and walk up to the Platia Simis, on which stands the Pili Agiou Pavlou, Museum of Modern Greek Art with its Nestorideion Melathro wing behind, and the Naos Afroditis - 3rd century BC temple of Aphrodite. Go further along Palatos to visit the Museum of the Decorative Arts, and then the Church of Our Lady of the Castle on Megalou Alexandrou Square. Right across is the arterial Ippon Street or Avenue of the Knights, on which is the Museum of Archaeology in the 15th century knights' hospital, Mikro Palati, and several buildings where the knights lived. It leads up to the 14th century Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes (Palati Megalon Magistron), locally known as Kastello. Destroyed by an explosion in 1856, the structure that stands today is a reconstruction by Vittorio Mesturino in 1940 to convert it into a summer residence for the King of Italy Victor Emmanuel III.
