Tour Montparnasse, Paris

If the queues at the Eiffel Tower are too much for you, then the Montparnasse Tower is just the place you are looking for.

If the queues at the Eiffel Tower are too much for you, then the Montparnasse Tower is just the place you are looking for. The 210 metre tall skyscraper is the 3rd tallest building in Paris, and offers incredible views from the outdoor roof terrace on the 59th floor. In fact, it is said that Tour Montparnasse offers better views than the Eiffel Tower as it offers views of the latter in the Paris skyline.

Designed by architects Eugène Beaudouin, Jean Saubot, Urbain Cassan, and Louis Hoym de Marien, its foundation is made of 56 reinforced concrete pillars which go down to 70 meters below street level as the soil bed is labile. It has an almond-shaped base measuring 50 × 32 meters. Most of the floors have offices, but the base is a shopping arcade with various retail outlets including the Galeries Lafayette.

A quick elevator ride takes visitors up to the Panoramic Observatory of the Montparnasse Tower on the 56th floor at 200 metres above sea level. This level has interactive terminals, a gallery of 185 archive photos of Paris, café, bar, souvenir shop and Le Ciel de Paris restaurant. Take the stairway to the open-air terrace with large bay-windows for views that extend upto 40 kilometres on a clear day. The Montparnasse Tower lies on the axis along the Palais de Chaillot, Trocadéro, Eiffel Tower, Champ-de-Mars, and Ecole Militaire, offering great views of these landmarks.
