Spread over 55 acres in Parkville, the Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens are home to over 5100 animals across 320 species from Australia and around the world. There are climatic zones such as the African rainforest with gorillas, pigmy hippos and parrots; Asian Rainforest with tigers, orangutans, and elephants; and the Australian bush with koala, kangaroos, emu, Tasmanian Devils, wallabys, Cockatoos, Wonga pigeons, and endangered hairy nose wombats. The Lemur Island recreates a Madagascar forest, while the Wild Sea area has coastal and ocean species such as pelicans, penguins and seals. The Butterfly House is popular with kids.
