Nestled atop Poggio Hill, the Castello San Giorgio is a military fortification in La Spezia that originally dates back to Nicolò Fieschi's 13th century expansion of the old fortress on the spot. The castle was rebuilt in 1343 when Luogo de Spetia became the seat of the new Podesteria, and then again in 1606 by the Genoese when the Torre Scola (Tower of St. John the Baptist) was added. The Castle houses the Ubaldo Formentini Archaeological Museum which showcases artifacts from the prehistoric to medieval era.
