One of Amsterdam’s best known areas, De Wallen or the Red Light District lies around the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal and street, with a cozy grid of alleys lined with brothels, sex shops, peep shows, nightclubs, hostels, bars and cannabis coffee shops. The side streets are lined with large glass door panels, behind which prostitutes pose and negotiate. With prostitution being legal here, De Wallen provides a safe environment for sex workers and visitors to go about business without exploitation. Adult tourists who are not interested in availing any services are still recommended to visit the area, to truly get a feel of Amsterdam’s laid-back and open culture which is tolerant of people from all walks of life.

With its proximity to the harbor, Amsterdam has historically been a trading city visited by merchant and sailors. The brothels were visited by travelers who had been at sea for months, and later by French soldiers when Napolean invaded Holland. The De Wallen area not only has sex-related outlets, but is also home to several historic buildings such as the Oude Kerk (Old Church), Waag (Weigh House), Nieumarkt, Agnietenkapel monastery chapel, AND Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic). It also has an Erotic Museum, and Red Light Secrets – Museum of Prostitution. There are works of art in the area as well, including a bronze statue on the Oudekerksplein in front of the Oude Kerk showing a woman standing in a doorway.
