Galata Museo del Mare, Genoa

The Galata Museum of the Sea in Genoa is a maritime museum that explores the seafaring history of the Mediterranean.

The Galata Museum of the Sea in Genoa is a maritime museum that explores the seafaring history of the Mediterranean. The largest museum in Italy dedicated to sailing, it is housed in the Palazzo Galata restored by the Spanish architect Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra. Spread across four floors, the museum has 23 exhibitions on display.

The ground floor has a portrait of Christopher Columbus and Marcello Staglieno's Codice dei Privilegi, a collection of manuscripts that describe Columbus' exploits. The room of the arsenal of Republic of Genoa has a replica of a 40 metre long galley from the 17th century. The Atlases and Globes Room on the first floor traces the discovery of new lands and seas during the 16th and 17th century. The second floor displays navigational instruments, and has a Storm Room that recreates storm conditions at sea that lead to shipwrecks. The third floor has the Memory and Migration section that explores Italian emigration by sea as well as immigration to Italy. On top is a terraced garden with views over the port and city.

For a more immersive experience, you can go over to the docks and hop aboard the S518 Nazario Sauro submarine. Learn about life aboard a submarine, how it operates, and view ships through the periscope.
