Massachusetts State House, Boston

The Massachusetts State House is the state capitol and seat of government, built in 1797 on land once owned by John Hancock.

The Massachusetts State House is the state capitol and seat of government, built in 1797 on land once owned by John Hancock. Designed by Charles Bulfinch, the dome made out of wood shingles covered with copper was later refurbished with 23k gold leaf, making for a spectacular view at sunset from the Massachusetts Avenue bridge. At the top of the golden dome is a wooden pinecone symbolizing the importance of logging, and in the House of Representatives chambers hangs a wooden Sacred Cod symbolizing the significance of the fishing industry to Boston. A National Historic Landmark, it is a point on the Freedom Trail.
