The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian is dedicated to the patron saint of Rio de Janeiro, St Sebastian.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian is dedicated to the patron saint of Rio de Janeiro, St Sebastian. One of Oscar Niemeyer’s most famous designs, the modern conical structure built between 1964 and 1979 is shaped like a volcano, 75 metres tall with a diameter of 106 metres at the base. The architecture was inspired by the Mayan Pyramids of Mexico. Of note are the four rectilinear 64 metre tall stained-glass windows that extend from the floor to ceiling. The spacious interiors can accommodate upto 20,000 people at a time.
