The National Historical Museum traces the social and economic history of Brazil from its founding through colonial times and imperial rule to its early days as a republic.

The National Historical Museum traces the social and economic history of Brazil from its founding through colonial times and imperial rule to its early days as a republic. Housed in the Casa do Trem arsenal and adjacent structures of the 17th century fort at Calaboose, the collection has over 350,000 artifacts spread over 2 floors. The ground floor displays the numismatic collection which is the largest in Latin America, a historic Protos car, gilded imperial coaches, Indo-Potuguese religious sculptures in ivory, cusquenha paintings, and a Discovery Room for kids. The first floor has the archives, library, artifacts from colonial times, temporary exhibitions and a traditional 19th century homeopathic pharmacy.
