Tremé, New Orleans

Dive into the heart of African-American and Creole culture with a tour of the vibrant neighborhood of Treme.

Dive into the heart of African-American and Creole culture with a tour of the vibrant neighborhood of Treme. Originally established as the Morand Plantation and the forts of St. Ferdinand and St. John, the area was named after French immigrant Claude Tremé who bought part of the area. It came to be settled by free people of color and other ethnic communities, which led to the development of its effervescent cultural scene. Bound by the Esplanade Avenue to the east, North Rampart Street in the south, St. Louis Street to the west and North Broad Street in the north, the racially mixed neighborhood is best known as the birthplace of jazz.

Highlights of the area are the Louis Armstrong Park which is home to the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts, the New Orleans African-American Museum, St. Augustine Catholic Church, and the St. Louis Cemetery #1.
