Lafayette Cemetery, New Orleans

Established in 1833, the Lafayette Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in New Orleans.

Established in 1833, the Lafayette Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in New Orleans. The green shaded area in the Garden District has a host of interesting 19th century tombs which shed light on the local history of the city. Lafayette Cemetery #1 is the original burial ground, located at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Pyrtania Street. Lafayette Cemetery #2 on South Saratoga is newer, but has not been well maintained. Over 7000 people lie buried in the 1000 tombs dotting the cemetery, several of whom were victims of the yellow-fever epidemic that plagued the city in the 19th century. Tombs of note include those of the Jefferson Fire Company #22 (featuring a carved fire engine), Lafayette Hook and Ladder Company #1, and Chalmette Fire Company #32, which have large shared monuments for their servicemen and their families. Guided tours of the cemetery show visitors around all the remarkable sculptures and monuments marking the graves of local notable personalities.
