French Quarter, New Orleans

Settled by the French in 1718, the French Quarter on the banks of the Mississippi River is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans.

Settled by the French in 1718, the French Quarter on the banks of the Mississippi River is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. Edged by the Esplanade Avenue, N Rampart Street, and Decatur Street, the Quarter is dotted with historic buildings from the 18th century Spanish rule and 19th century US annexation following the Louisiana Purchase. The area between Canal Street and Orleans Street, known as the Upper Quarter, is the popular touristy part while the Lower Quarter to the northwest has mostly residential avenues. St. Ann Street marks the Lavender Line or Velvet Line, which delineates the predominately gay district in the Lower Quarter.

The compact area is a melting pot of French, Spanish, Italian, African, Irish and other immigrants, and combines historical attractions with a vibrant party scene. At its heart is the stately Jackson Square, a gated park marked by the equestrian statue of 7th President of the United States Andrew Jackson. It us surrounded by the St Louis Cathedral, Jackson Brewery, historic Pontalba Buildings, and the Louisiana State Museum's Cabildo and Presbytere buildings. Also on Decatur Street are the Palm Court Jazz Café and the legendary Café du Monde, known for its café au lait and beignets. The French Market, which spans from the Café du Monde to the flea market stalls around the Old Mint building, is the one of the oldest markets in the US. Founded as a Native American trading post before European colonization, the market has evolved into a hub for artisanal souvenirs, antiques, and excellent culinary fare.

Royal Street has several art galleries, including Martin Lawrence Gallery, Sutton Galleries, Kuko Gallery, Galerie Rue Royale, Gallery Rinard, Rodrigue Studio where you can see the famous Blue Dog works, Gallery Burguieres, Peter O'Neill Gallery, Gallery Orange, Pennington Fine Art, Lucky Rose Gallery, Douglas Michael Gallery, Craig Tracy Gallery, Tanner Original Art, Tresor Gallery, Frederick Guess Studio, Antieau Gallery, Graphite Galleries, and Harouni Gallery. You can also find upscale antique stores, landmark hotels, jewelry stores, and specialty shops.

Named after the French royal House of Bourbon, the Bourbon Street is the ultimate party destination, lined with numerous bars, dance clubs, street performers, and live music venues that come alive at night. Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop is the oldest operating bar in the US which opened all the way back in 1772. Other popular haunts are the Old Absinthe House which counts Franklin Roosevelt and Oscar Wilde as patrons, Pat O'Brien's Bar which invented the fruity red Hurricane cocktail and popularized the dueling piano, Johnny White's, Spirits on Bourbon which has the infamous barber's chair and the Resurrection served in a flashing skull cup, Fritzels European Jazz Club, Jazz Playhouse, Tropical Isle which serves the original Hand Grenade, Meow which has the best karaoke on the street, Bourbon Pub which is the largest gay club in the city, Cafe Lafitte in Exile which is the oldest gay bar in the US, and Oz, another flashy gay club. The Musical Legends Park has life-size statues of local musical legends.

The Bohemian neighborhood turns into a riot of festivities and color when it hosts the wildest Mardi Gras parades and parties for about 2 weeks till Shrove Tuesday in February.
