The National Museum houses an important collection of varied artifacts that highlight the eventful history and varied culture of India.

The National Museum houses an important collection of varied artifacts that highlight the eventful history and varied culture of India. The layout here is labyrinthine, but the collection ranging from archeological and anthropological artifacts to paintings and decorative arts is unparalleled and contains some true masterpieces. The museum houses 200,000 works of art, from intricate miniature paintings to silk banners and gold overlaid Thanjavur paintings.

The ground floor has archaeological finds from the Bronze Age Harappan Civilization that existed 5000 years ago, and art from the Maurya, Sunga, Satavahana, Kushana, Gupta and late medieval eras, coins and decorative arts. The first floor showcases ancient manuscripts, Central Asian antiquities, and Alamkara - tracing the evolving styles of jewelry from the Indus Valley Civilization to the present day. The second floor displays costumes, wood carvings, musical intruments, anthropological exhibits, Pre-Columbian and Western arts, arms and armour.

Highlights of the museum include the bronze figurine of the Dancing Girl from Mohenjodaro, terracotta Mother Goddess, Rakhigarhi skeleton, Buddhist rock carvings from Bharhut,Gupta era reliefs depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, jewel-studded throne of the King of Varanasi, antique Indian game-sets, miniature painting of Marriage procession of Dara Shikoh, Gupta era gold coins, Gandhara-era stone statue of Standing Buddha with Greek hair and a Roman toga, and a 5-tiered octagonal wooden chariot dedicated to Lord Vishnu parked near the museum entrance.
