Purana Qila, New Delhi

The Purana Qila (Old Fort), built by Humayun and Sher Shah Suri, comprises the ruins of the 16th century city of Shergarh (Dina-panah).

The Purana Qila (Old Fort), built by Humayun and Sher Shah Suri, comprises the ruins of the 16th century city of Shergarh (Dina-panah). The complex sits on top of what is believed to be the site of Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata epic. The 18 metre high walls run 1.5 km, with 3 gates - Talaqui Darwaza or the forbidden gateway to the north, Humayun gateway in the south, and the Bada Darwaza or big gate in the west. Their design combines typical Islamic pointed arch with Hindu Chhatris and brackets. The complex also has the Sher Mandal - Humayun's library, Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, and an Archaeological Museum displaying excavated finds from the area which throw light on Delhi's eventful history.
