Alfama, Lisbon

Sprawling on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tejo River estuary, Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon.

Sprawling on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tejo River estuary, Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon. Its name is derived from the Arabic Al-hamma which translates to 'hot springs' or 'baths', attributed to the mineral springs formed by a geological fault that cuts the Miocene layers. It still retains imprints of its Moorish heritage, with closely packed colorful buildings and irregular alleys.

The historical district, which encompasses the parishes of São Miguel, Santo Estêvão, São Vicente de Fora, along with Rua do Barão and Rua São João da Praça, has several important attractions. Its highlights are the Se Cathedral, Lisbon Castle, National Pantheon, Fado Museum, Museu Teatro Romano, Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, Museum of Decorative Arts, Casa dos Bicos, and Saint Anthony’s Church. Walk around to see the charming houses with wrought iron balconies and terracotta roofs. There are several fountains in the area, of which the magnificent El Rei is best known. Make your way to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia (Santa Luzia Viewpoint), from where you can get breathtaking views over Alfama. The Miradouro das Portas do Sol (Gates of the Sun) and Graca also offer gorgeous views. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the Feira Da Ladra flea market is set up on the Campo de Santa Clara where you can pick up souvenirs.

You can also explore the neighborhood on the number 28 tram route from Graca to Baixa, which snakes its way through Alfama's charming streets. Hop aboard one of the old Remodelado trams from the 1930s and enjoy the scenic ride.
