Oceanarium, Lisbon

The Lisbon Oceanarium in the Parque das Nações is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe.

The Lisbon Oceanarium in the Parque das Nações is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe. It is home to over 16000 marine animals of 450 species housed in 30 tanks. Built by American architect Peter Chermayeff, the building resembles an aircraft carrier, and is built on a pier in an artificial lagoon. Its main exhibit is the central aquarium which represents the Global Ocean, in which varied species such as sharks, tunas, stingrays, mackerel, barracudas and tropical fish coexist. Around the central tank are 4 different ecosystems with native flora and fauna - North Atlantic coast, Antarctic coast, Temperate Pacific kelp forests, and Tropical Indian coral reefs. There are 25 other smaller aquariums representing habitats from around the world. Explore the complex to see diverse species including birds such as penguins, puffins and terns, mammals (otters), and amphibians such as salamander, newts and tree frogs.
