Herengracht is the first of the 3 major canals inside the Singelgracht, which form a UNESCO World Heritage Site for exemplifying expertise in engineering and town planning. It is known for its Gouden Bocht (Golden Bend), one of the most prestigious neighborhoods, lined with elegant double-wide mansions with classicist facades, stuccoed ceilings, and fine gardens.

Highlights along the canal include the oldest house in Amsterdam at no. 81, Huis van Bartolotti at no. 168-170, Stichting Collectie Van Noordwijk at no. 368 which is part of the Cromhout Huis designed by Vingboons at nos. 364-370, Het Grachtenhuis at no. 386, 17thcentury West India House which was the HQ of the Dutch West India Company at no. 466, De Neufville Huis at nos. 475-476, Kattenkabinet at no. 497, Huis met de Kolommen – the Mayor’s residence at no. 502, Museum Geelvinck at no. 518, Peter the Great’s temporary residence at no. 527, and Samuel Sarphati’s house at no. 598, and Museum Willet-Holthuysen at no. 605.
