Westerkerk, Amsterdam

The Westerkerk (Western Church) on the banks of the Prinsengracht is the largest church in Amsterdam.

The Westerkerk (Western Church) on the banks of the Prinsengracht is the largest church in Amsterdam. Built in Renaissance style between 1620 and 1631, it is known for its 87 metre high Westertoren, which is the tallest church tower in Amsterdam. The tower is topped by a bright, blue-coloured crown replicating the Imperial Crown of Austria of Maximilian I and is open to guided tours from June to September. Rembrandt lies buried here in the church. The church also finds a mention in Anne Frank’s Diary, where she mentions that she was soothed by the chiming of the bells.
