Amalienborg, Copenhagen

The Amalienborg is the winter home of the Danish royal family, comprising 4 identical Danish Rococco buildings from the 18th century. Originally built for noblemen, it became the royal residence after the Christiansborg Palace burnt down in 1794. Christian IX's Palace (initially Schack's Palace) is home to Queen Margrethe II and the Prince Consort and their presence is indicated by a raised Danish flag at the building. It is not open to public. Christian VIII's Palace is where the Queen receives state guests and hosts important functions. Here you can see the collection of breathtaking Flora Danica porcelain with patterns of native wild plants, and visit the Amalienborg Museum to learn about the history of Danish monarchy and its traditions in the decadent rooms of the palace. The courtyard has a bronze equestrian statue of Frederik V.

The ceremonial Changing of The Royal Guards is worth seeing, as they start from the Rosenborg barracks at 11.30 am and march through the streets of Copenhagen to reach Amalienborg at 12.00 noon. If you are visiting when the royal family is in residence, you will get to witness up close the more flamboyant king's watch or lieutenant watch as opposed to the plain palace watch.
