Built in 1897 as Chicago's first public library and headquarters of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Chicago Cultural Center building now houses the city's Visitor Information Center, galleries, and exhibition halls. It has a 4-storey north wing, and a 5-storey south wing designed in a generally neoclassical style with Italian Renaissance elements. The building is an architectural delight, featuring a limestone façade with colonnaded galleries. It is worth a visit to see the beautiful interiors with marble halls and stairways, and mosaics of Favrile glass, stone, gold leaf, and mother of pearl. The ceiling of Preston Bradley Hall has a 38-foot Tiffany glass dome by Holtzer, and the north wing includes the impressive Grand Army of the Republic Rotunda with a Renaissance stained-glass dome by Healy and Millet. The Cultural Center presents an excellent program of city-approved art and music events, as well as good theater performances.
