Buckingham Fountain, Chicago

The Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park is one of the largest fountains in the world and a breathtakingly beautiful sight to behold.

The Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park is one of the largest fountains in the world and a breathtakingly beautiful sight to behold. Built by Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother Clarence, the Beaux Arts fountain was designed by Edward H. Bennett. The tiered wedding cake style fountain in pink Georgia marble allegorically represents Lake Michigan, and the 4 Art Deco style bronze sea-horses on the sides represent the states bordering the lake - Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. It is set in a pool measuring 280 feet in diameter.

The fountain has a water display every hour for 20 minutes, with 193 powerful jets creating beautiful patterns. The central jet pushes water up as high as 150 feet. Shows take place from 8 AM to 11 PM from mid-April through mid-October, and are best viewed after dusk when the display is accompanied with music and lights.
