The John G. Shedd Aquarium on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago is home to over 32,000 marine animals across 1500 species from around the world. It is part of the Museum Campus and welcomes over 2 million visitors annually. There are several permanent exhibits at Shedd, as well as interactive experiences such as a 4D Theater and Stingray Touch.

  • Waters of the World has exhibits on 76 habitats, from rivers and lakes to islands and oceans. You can see Bahamian iguana, African cichlids, starfish, sea-horses and American alligators here.
  • The Wild Reef exhibit recreates a Philippine coral reef on the Apo Island marine reserve, and has an enormous shark tank where you can observe sharks up close.
  • Caribbean Reef features a tropical pool in which you can see a diver feed and interact with the animals.
  • The Amazon Rising exhibit recreated the ecosystem of a flooded Amazon forest with 250 different species, including anacondas, piranhas, spiders, tarantulas, stingrays, monkeys and fruit-eating fish called tambaqui.
  • The Abbott Oceanarium showcases the ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest, housing Pacific white-sided dolphins, belugas, sea otters, and California sea lions.
  • The Polar Play Zone features penguins, beluga whales, and dolphins. Kids can dress up as penguins here and play around.
