Navy Pier, Chicago

The Navy Pier by Lake Michigan is undoubtedly Chicago's most popular destination, offering over 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions and exhibition facilities.

The Navy Pier by Lake Michigan is undoubtedly Chicago's most popular destination, offering over 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, family attractions and exhibition facilities. Built in 1916 as a dock and recreational space, the Navy Pier has had many different uses over the years, and was converted into its present form in 1994. There are several tours and cruises of the lake that start from the Pier. The Lake Pavilions along the shore offer great views and protection from bad weather, while the South Dock promenade is a great place for a stroll. The entire 3,300 foot stretch has various activities and things to do for all.

Amusement and Rides

  • The iconic Centennial Wheel soars up to 200 feet, and is an integral part of the Chicago skyline. Offering incredible views of the city and Lake Michigan from enclosed gondolas, this Ferris wheel is a must-ride all year round.
  • Amazing Chicago's Funhouse Maze offers 4000 square feet of tunnels and mazes through which you can navigate at your own pace.
  • The Carousel features 36 hand-painted animals such as horses, lions, rabbits, and frogs, and rounding boards that illustrate the Navy Pier's history.
  • The Wave Swinger is a carousel ride that takes you 14 feet above a pond for fun views over the area. The pool at the base has 8 token-operated, remote control boats that you can navigate through the waters.
  • Light Tower Ride offers a free-falling experience, taking you up 13 feet near the top and back down.
  • The Climbing Walls have harnesses and ropes that help you climb up the interactive walls.
  • The Polk Bros Fountain and Plaza features a 12,500 square foot fountain with over 150 programmable jets that mimic the natural movements of waves, schools of fish or flocks of birds.

Cultural Attractions

  • The Richard H. Driehaus Gallery of Stained Glass showcases 11 breathtaking stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany, as well as a monumental fire screen.
  • The Chicago Children's Museum offers fun, interactive experiences for children under 10 years and their families.
  • The Crystal Gardens is an indoor botanical garden in a glass atrium spread over 1 acre with a 50-foot high arched ceiling. With over 80 live palm trees, hanging lights and fountains, it is a great setting for events. It also offers good views of the lakefront, Chicago skyline and Centennial Wheel.
  • There are outdoor art installations such as the anchor from USS Chicago, a bronze sculpture of actor Bob Newhart on a couch as on The Bob Newhart Show, the 'Captain on the Helm' statue dedicated to maritime captains, and the Crack the Whip sculpture by J. Seward Johnson Jr depicting 8 children at play holding hands, and a large orange 'P' which honors the Polk family of the Polk Bros retail chain.

Events

  • The Chicago Shakespeare Theater presents an annual production of classics as well as new works.
  • The Pepsi Skyline stage hosts a variety of live events including music, theater, comedy and acrobatic performances from summer through early fall.
  • The Miller Lite Beer Garden presents free, live, outdoor music performances in summer.

Several buses reach Navy Pier, including #29 State, #65 Grand, #66 Chicago, and #124 Navy Pier Express from the 2 Metro stations in the Loop. There are free trolley services that run around the Pier all year except winters.
