Lake Michigan, Chicago

One of the 5 Great Lakes of North America, Lake Michigan has historically played a major role in the development of Chicago and the Midwest by providing easy connectivity and transportation routes with other ports.

One of the 5 Great Lakes of North America, Lake Michigan has historically played a major role in the development of Chicago and the Midwest by providing easy connectivity and transportation routes with other ports. Today, the pristine waters of the lake and its bustling shore form the most popular recreational area for Chicagoans all year long.

The warmer months witness a flurry of activity on the lake, from individual kayaks and speed-boats to luxury cruises that offer a fun and relaxing experience. There are a variety of lake cruises to choose from, and you can enjoy Chicago's iconic skyline with views of the Navy Pier, Willis Tower, Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, Museum Campus, and Soldier Field from the lake. You can also combine it with a cruise on the Chicago River which flows by other landmarks.

The Chicago Lakefront Trail comprises parks, beaches, harbors and marinas, and residential developments along an 18 mile walking and cycling path on the banks of the lake. Starting from the South Shore Cultural Center, there are a range of attractions along the way such as the Museum of Science and Industry, McCormick Place, Soldier Field, Chicago's Museum Campus, Monroe Harbor, Navy Pier, Belmont Harbor, and the Waveland Clock Tower.

About Lake Michigan

 Chicago, IL, United States

Lake Michigan and Nearby Sights on Map

Rogers Beach

The perfect size for a beach, with tennis courts and a cliff for contemplative strolls, picnic space and a modest strip of sand for swimmers

Howard Beach

There's a pretty good playground here, and a modestly-sized beach

Jarvis and Fargo Beaches

Less crowded than their neighboring beaches

Emil Bach House

This is the only survivor of the two homes Frank Lloyd Wright built in Rogers Park, commissioned by a local brick magnate

Juneway Terrace Beach

This is it: you've reached the end of Chicago, and it's a nice one, with lots of green space and a fun jump down to the sand

Loyola Park & Beach

Wide open spaces are here: room for soccer, basketball courts, and a public field for baseball (along with one non-public field)

The Side Project

They're new in the neighborhood, but the Side Project is quickly becoming one of Chicago's best storefront theaters

Hartigan Park & Beach

Close to the university and the student housing

Pratt Beach

Aside from the tennis courts and the jogging paths, there are lots of interesting features to be found here: weeping trees left from this area's original incarnation as a swamp, a giant concrete sculpture for climbing, tennis courts, random public art installations, and best of all, the long pier leading out to an old lighthouse

Madonna della Strada Chapel

Art deco style meets religious devotion in the spectacular Madonna della Strada Chapel, built in 1938 on the grounds of Loyola University's campus
