The famous Pyramids of Giza on the western outskirts of Cairo are one of the ‘7 Wonders of the Ancient World’, standing as a testament to the early civilization’s engineering skills. A symbol of the Egyptians’ belief in the afterlife, the Pyramids preserve the mummified mortal remains of the pharaohs and everything they would require in the spirit world. Take a guided tour to learn more about the culture of the pharaonic times, and how the pyramids were re-discovered in the modern times.

There are three pyramids at Giza - the Small or First pyramid built by Menkaure, the Second pyramid built by Khefre, and the Great Pyramid built by Khufu aka Cheops. The remains of Khefre's mortuary temple, the Temple of the Valley, and rising causeway can be seen at this site. These temples witnessed the religious rites during the embalming of the body. You can enter the pyramids - the long, narrow tunnels leading into the inner burial chambers of each pyramid may be uncomfortable, but you get to see the preserved original burial chambers.

On the way to the Temple of the Valley, lies the large statue of the legendary Sphinx, with the body of a lion and the face of a man. It is 70 m long and 20 m high, and the face closely resembles that of King Kephren.

Memphis is another historically important site as it was the capital of Upper and Lower Egypt during the 1st dynasty. It has the giant statue of Ramses II and Temple of Ptah. Dahsur at the southern end forms part of the necropolis, and shows the transition from step pyramid to true, smooth pyramid in the gigantic Red pyramid’s architecture.

The step pyramid of King Zoser designed by Imhotep was the first pyramid to be built in Egypt and can be found in Sakkara.
