The Saladin Citadel on Mokattam Hill in Cairo was laid out in the 12thcentury by Ayyubid king Salah al-Din or Saladin to protect the city from the Crusaders. It was subsequently the administrative seat of several dynasties including the Ayyubids, Mamluks, and some Ottomans. The historic area has the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, Qaser Al-Gawhara Palace Museum, Palace Ablaq, Al-Nasser Mohammed Ibn Kalawoun, Carriage Museum, Egyptian Military Museum and the Egyptian Police Museum.
