Old Cairo is a historic neighborhood along the banks of the Nile in south Cairo that encompasses the remnants of cities which were capitals before Al-Qahira, such as Fustat, Al-Askar and Al-Qatta'i. Predating Islamic Cairo that was founded in 969 AD, it includes the area of Coptic Cairo. It has a few Islamic structures such as the Ibn Tulun Mosque and Amr Mosque, but mostly Coptic Christian complexes, such as the Saint George Church and Monastery, Hanging Church, Churches of Saint Sergius and Saint Barbara, and Coptic Museum. It also has the Ben Ezra Synagogue, which was originally a Coptic church. The ruins of Fort Babylon stand as testament to the Roman past of the city.
