Founded during the Old Kingdom, it was an important city on the banks of the Nile during the ancient era. Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary funerary monuments, including rock tombs, ornate mastabas, temples and pyramids. The 5000 year old ruins have been preserved as an open-air museum.
