The Al-Rifa'i Mosque was constructed in 2 phases between 1869 and 1912, as a larger replacement for the previous zawiya (shrine) of Islamic saint Ahmad al-Rifa'i. The Bahri Mamluk style building has a large prayer hall clad in marble, lit beautifully by brass lamps. The alabaster dikka has gilded inscriptions of Quran verses all around it. The mosque has the shrine of al-Rifa'I, decorated with finely carved wood, along with the shrines of local saints Ali Abi-Shubbak and Yahya al-Ansari. The mosque also has the tombs of King Farouk, his parents King Fuad and Nazli Sabri, Reza Shah Pahlavi of Iran and his son Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Khedive Ismail and his 3 wives, and Sultan Hussein Kamel.
