Atomium, Brussels

The Atomium is an icon of Brussels and Belgium, created in 1958 for the World Fair in Brussels.

The Atomium is an icon of Brussels and Belgium, created in 1958 for the World Fair in Brussels. It was built to symbolize faith in scientific progress and project an optimistic vision for the future, where the energy of the atom would be harnessed for benefit.

Uniquely shaped like an iron crystal unit magnified 165 billion times, the 102 metre tall body-centred-cubic structure has 9 stainless steel clad spheres representing the atoms. The 18 metre diameter spheres host temporary exhibitions and multimedia installations, and the highest one offers spectacular panoramic views over the city. There is also a permanent exhibit on the history of the Atomium in one of the spheres, with small models of some countries’ pavilions as well as archived documents, photographs, souvenirs and videos. Guided tours are available on advance reservation through their website. Audio-guides of the structure are also available, and you can explore the different exhibits in the spheres via the connecting tubes which have escalators in them.
