Situated on a hill in the Old Town, the central monument designed by Ján Svetlík in Stalinist style has an 11 metre high statue of a Soviet soldier holding a flag, atop a 39 metre high obelisk on a colonnaded open gallery. Names of Slovak cities liberated by the Red Army are inscribed around the base.
