U.S.S. Constitution, Boston

The USS Constitution is the world's oldest afloat commissioned warship, docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard in the Boston National Historical Park.

The USS Constitution is the world's oldest afloat commissioned warship, docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard in the Boston National Historical Park. Built in 1794-'97 at Edmund Hartt's Shipyard, the wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate was ordered as part of the 6 warships that formed the first fleet of the US Navy after independence. The USS Constitution is vital to Boston's history and a point on the Freedom Trail. Over 205 feet tall and weighing 2200 tons, it played an important role in the War of 1812 against the United Kingdom when it staved off the British frigate HMS Guerriere. This is when it earned its nickname 'Old Ironsides' as it remained unaffected by cannonballs slamming into it.

The USS Constitution is open to the public all year round. Admission is free for all with valid identification. Explore the deck of the historic warship and learn about its war exploits and peacekeeping efforts from the active duty U.S. Navy Sailors aboard.

The USS Constitution Museum is a short walk from here, housed in a restored shipyard building on Pier 2. It brings alive the warship's storied past, and recreates the experience of life at sea in the early 19th century with interactive, hands-on exhibits.
