Bunker Hill Monument, Boston

The Bunker Hill Monument on Monument Square marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution fought on June 17, 1775.

The Bunker Hill Monument on Monument Square marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution fought on June 17, 1775. The 221 feet high granite obelisk is actually located on Breed's Hill which was mistaken for Bunker Hill by the Revolutionaries. The new and inexperienced colonial army put on a brave front, but was eventually overpowered by the resourceful British army. You can climb the 294 steps of the Bunker Hill Monument with free passes, which are limited in number and offered on a first come first served basis. The Bunker Hill Museum across from the Monument displays artifacts from the battle including a cannonball, snare drum, sword, masonic apron belonging to Dr. Joseph Warren, and a trowel used by the Marquis de Lafayette in the groundbreaking for the monument on the 50th anniversary of the battle.
