Perched 80 metres high on a rocky granite islet off the Normandy coast, Mont Saint Michel is one of the most iconic sights of France.
Perched 80 metres high on a rocky granite islet off the Normandy coast, Mont Saint Michel is one of the most iconic sights of France. The medieval Gothic style Benedictine Abbey with sturdy fortifications, and its gorgeous bay are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Subject to the greatest tidal ranges in Europe, the bay offers incredible, drifting views all year round.
The layout reflects the feudal structure of society in the Middle Ages, with the abbey and monastery at top, then the Great halls, then stores and housing, and finally the fishermen and farmers' houses at the bottom outside the walls. The fortified entrance through the Tour du Roi with its portcullis and the Guards Rooms leads to the Grande Rue – main street, lined with museums such as Musée Historique du Mont Saint Michel and Archéoscope du Mont Saint Michel, shops and the Eglise Saint-Pierre which is dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen. The Grande Degre stairway leads to the heart of the abbey. The original 10th century pre-Roman style church Notre-Dame Sous-Terre still survives, but the main church is an 11th century Romanesque edifice on top, consisting of 4 crypts built into the spur of the rock and a flamboyant Gothic chancel. The Neo-Gothic church tower, built in 1897, is topped by a gilded copper statue of Saint Michael with a sword and set of scales by sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet.
The living area of the monks, the Merveille, is an architectural marvel recognized as the finest building of the ensemble. The Norman-Gothic masterpiece has 2 blocks of 3-storey buttressed buildings on a steep slope – the east has the chaplaincy, dining-hall, and monks refectory, while the wine cellar, Knights room or scriptorium, and cloisters with a medieval garden and limestone columns arranged in quincunx, are to the west.
Guided tours are available, subject to tidal conditions.
