Medvedgrad is a 13th century fortified town 11 kms to the north of Zagreb, built at an elevation of 500 metres on the slopes of the Medvednica Mountain after the Mongol invasion of Zagreb. Damaged by an earthquake in 1590, it was abandoned for centuries before its restoration in the 20th century. Explore the medieval complex and see the rebuilt walls and towers, chapel of St. Philip and Jacob, and the Shrine of the Homeland with an Eternal Flame which pays homage to those who died for a free Croatia. In July, it hosts open-air concerts as part of Medvedgrad Music Evenings. In September, a medieval fair is organized here.
