Berlin Wall, Berlin

Little is left of the Berlin Wall at its original site, which was destroyed almost everywhere when Germany was reunified in 1989.

Little is left of the Berlin Wall at its original site, which was destroyed almost everywhere when Germany was reunified in 1989. Three long sections are still standing: ✓an 80 metre-long (260 feet) piece of the first wall at the Topography of Terror - site of the former Gestapo headquarters, ✓a section of the wall along the Spree River near the Oberbaumbrücke - East Side Gallery, and ✓a third section in the north at Bernauer Strasse, which was turned into the Gedenkstatte Berliner Mauer or Berlin Wall Memorial in 1999.

✓The Topography of Terror is a museum documenting the atrocities deployed by the Nazi regime.

✓The East Side Gallery is a 1.3 km long section in central Berlin along the Spree river. Possibly the world’s longest open-air gallery, it presents 105 murals by artists from all over the world dating from 1990. The most iconic mural here is Dmitri Vrubel’s My God, Help Me to Survive this Deadly Love showing Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker in a fraternal embrace.

✓Walk through the memorial grounds along Bernauer Strasse to see remnant sections of the wall, and learn tidbits about divided Berlin. The grounds are organized into 4 areas – ●A-The Wall and the Death Strip, ●B-The Destruction of the City, ●C-Building the Wall, and ●D-Everyday life at the Wall.

At the east edge of Bernauer Strasse was a border wall, then a patrol road running through the ‘death strip’ of ditches and spike-mats, and then an inner wall whose relics are visible today. The Bernauer Strasse subway station became deserted after the Wall was built, as the trains that traveled from one end of West Berlin to the other did not stop here anymore. The entrance and exit were walled up, till the station reopened in 1990. On the grounds you can see the sites of the border houses, as well as the surface representations of escape tunnel paths dug out by escapees. There are GDR watch-towers along the way. See the copy of the Reconciliation sculpture and drop by at the Chapel of Reconciliation, which was built on the site of the Reconciliation Church which was blown up by GDR in 1985.

The Documentation Center presents "1961 | 1989. The Berlin Wall", an account of the post-World War II political situation that led to Berlin and Germany’s division into 4 parts led by the Soviets, Americans, British and French. It documents everyday life in a divided Berlin and the events leading to the fall of the Wall in 1989.
